Project's innovation

MOWGLY will take advantage of reuse of already existing or planned Satellite Access Architectures (fixed services) in Ku and/or Ka band. This will enable the development of an open competitive solution allowing versatile and low cost “on board” architectures. As such, it will foster the exploitation of technical capabilities of the space community with the objective of seizing market opportunities and meeting the demands of our European society. MOWGLY will allow to create several application perspectives (customised solutions for crew/passengers, real-time connectivity, “on-board” internet based specific information, billing ...) through the optimisation of the combination of space-based systems and terrestrial infrastructure.

These activities will contribute to reinforcing and maintaining Europe’s leadership in world aeronautics & space, but also in the trains and maritime environments. The MOWGLY consortium has been created with the aim of strengthening the supply chain for these technologies within the European Research Area through the integration of horizontal and vertical key expertises.

Specifically, the following research action will be addressed in MOWGLY:

Content of the area MOWGLY relevance
The aim is the integration and validation of innovative and low-cost satellite communications technologies and systems where satellite communications technologies may have a potential edge over terrestrial infrastructures. MOWGLY is clearly an European proposal for Global Broadband Solution.
It is based on a common open system (use of DVB-S2, DVB RCS (ETSI standard) standards and “DSL in the Sky” models). It is an open competitive solution taking advantage of reuse of already existing or planned Broadband Satellite Access Architectures (Fixed Services) in Ku and/or Ka band. As such, it aims at integrating and validating cost-effective satellite-based solutions for mobility applications.
Large scale distributive applications, or applications needing to address remote, isolated
or rural areas are typical applications where satellite communication technology may be the most appropriate communication platform to provide connectivity in the fields of transport, education (distance-learning), emergency systems and health (tele-medicine).
The main targeted field of applications is important as 3 main transport sectors are addressed : aircrafts, trains and ships. MOWGLY will provide open solutions to several schemes for passengers as well as crew services, namely : Access to any of the protocols, technology and business model experienced through the xDSL, Interconnection to ISP similar to DSL broadband access...
Moreover, beyond these sectors, MOWGLY could also provide an exchange channel for telemedecine, especially in terms of emergency case.
Communication on the move with dedicated transportation means is considered more and more vital for train, aircraft or maritime operators. MOWGLY addresses clearly aircrafts, trains and maritime sectors. Through the presence of partners, leader in their field like AIRBUS, ALSTOM, the consortium has a good overview of the need of final operators. They will ensure the fact that the requirement of operators will be taken into account. Besides, requirements will be enriched by the presence of an public Internet access services provider (Broadreach Network limited).

Moreover, MOWGLY will address also the real-time monitoring issues (maintenance purpose).
In the aeronautic sector, on board communications are increasingly considered as an important service to provide to customers, be it for professional purposes or for entertainment purposes. MOWGLY promotes the use of mobile desk on board of aircrafts, trains and vessels (More than 60% of business travellers carry laptop on-board and are very interested in broadband in-flight access) and enables access to entertainment applications.
Competitors of European aircraft manufacturers will soon be in a position to offer some form of multimedia connectivity on board of commercial aircraft. Similar services and usage are also of interest on board of trains or in a maritime environment. MOWGLY will contribute to foster the internet connectivity on board of commercial aircraft, trains and ships.
To be relevant and competitive, MOWGLY needs to propose a short-term market solution. As explained in the exploitation sectors section, this will reinforce the position of European aircraft manufacturers, but also all the supply chain included in the project.
The objective of the work is thus to allow for the provision of integrated services and applications packages (MBI ), based on innovative satellite telecommunications technology, to users travelling on board trains, ships or aircraft; these three transport means being typical market segment for mobile satellite systems. The aim of this project is to be able to provide both Internet services to customers during flight, train and ship trip. The philosophy is based on the development of modular system, with open architecture using the available standards (DVB-S2, DVB-RCS, “DSL in the sky. This will enable the development of cost-effectiveness solution.
MOWGLY solution encompasses also services to enable real-time monitoring from the ground infrastructures, to ensure better forecast/understanding of failure (safety & maintenance purposes).
These services will be based on a sound business case allowing the operators to take advantage of this new offer to their travelling customers. This project will be developed by taking into account the Consistent Business case aspects so that operators will be enabled to take advantage such solution for their customers.
